Kenya’s current agroecology strategy cites survey data showing that 75.2% of women had no agricultural land, compared with 66.4% of men. Fairtrade programmes support women’s leadership and decision-making in producer groups. Changing land ownership also needs action beyond certification.

Kenya’s 2026 agricultural wage order sets KSh 9,196.93 a month as the minimum consolidated wage for an unskilled employee. That is a legal floor, not a living-wage calculation. Fairtrade is raising the required wage floor on certified flower farms in stages and requires a worker-controlled Premium on Fairtrade sales.

Warming is projected to reduce suitable coffee-growing areas in East Africa. Kenyan growers must adapt while protecting their income. Fairtrade’s Kenya Climate Academy has worked with coffee cooperatives on farming practices, climate resilience and additional sources of income.

In a 2025 survey of more than 260 Kenyan tea growers and pickers, only one in five said their monthly income covered their family’s essentials. Fairtrade sales provide a Premium that producer groups can put toward priorities such as education, healthcare and other ways to earn. This figure describes those surveyed, not every Kenyan tea worker.

In South Africa’s Cape Winelands, a 2026 study estimated that a worker needs about R7,921 gross per month for a decent standard of living—around 50% above the legal minimum. Fairtrade is using that benchmark to support wage discussions among workers, producers and buyers. Buying Fairtrade wine supports that work; it does not mean every worker already earns a living wage.

Child labour in cocoa production remains documented in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Fairtrade prohibits child labour on certified farms and works to detect and address cases when found. Certification cannot guarantee that every bar is free of the risk.

A product’s ethical-sounding packaging tells you little about the terms behind it. The Fairtrade Mark identifies a product whose relevant supply chain is checked against Fairtrade standards, including applicable Minimum Price and Premium requirements. Look for the Mark on the specific item you are buying.

The IPCC projects that warming could shrink Kenya’s optimal tea-growing area and reduce yields. Fairtrade supports environmental improvements and adaptation projects, while the Premium gives producer groups resources to invest in their priorities. It does not erase the climate threat.
